In 2022, we developed an RFID poker table for the Sports Channel project, designed specifically for live-broadcasted tournaments. The design had to combine playing comfort with the requirements of studio production: real-time card reading, integration with the broadcast setup, and proper preparation of the table for cameras and lighting.
The project required concealing the electronics and wiring within the table’s structure, using matte fabric to minimize light reflections, and designing the entire setup so that the technology would remain invisible to the viewer and would not interfere with the players.
RFID Poker Table for Live Streaming
In a live poker production, the table’s appearance alone is not enough. The table must integrate with the broadcast system and provide the information needed to generate on-screen graphics, while remaining a fully functional playing table.
In the project for Kanał Sportowy, we used RFID technology, which allowed us to read cards located at individual stations. The solution was integrated into the table’s design so that the electronics would not interfere with the course of the game or the production team’s work.
How did the RFID system work in the poker table?
- RFID readers built into the countertop — the system components read data from cards equipped with the appropriate tags.
- Card Reading During the Game – the system identified the cards located at the players’ stations and transmitted the information to the broadcast control room.
- Integration with the broadcast interface — the data could have been used to display information about the cards and the progress of the hand to viewers.
This allowed viewers to follow the hand from a perspective not available to those seated at the table. RFID technology made it possible to show the players’ hole cards and create a clearer narrative for the poker broadcast.
A design built for studio use
One of the most important design challenges was to conceal the wires, readers, and other electronic components. The table had to maintain a clean, uncluttered appearance both in wide shots and close-ups, and all technical elements had to remain outside the play area.
We also used a matte fabric to minimize reflections from the studio lighting. This was important when working with multiple light sources and cameras positioned at different angles.
